Marius Pontmercy from Les Miserables
INFP
by Owen
requested by anonymous

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“Had you been there tonight you might know how it feels to be struck to the bone in a moment of breathless delight!”
Marius is a far more sensitive soul than the rest of the Les Amis de l’ABC, leading with his heart on his sleeve. He has deep, intense emotions that guide his every move and decision, such as meeting with Cosette at Rue Plumet in “A Heart Full of Love”. He is extremely loyal to her and all of his friends, providing everyone he loves with undying devotion. Marius’ moral compass is strong as well, as seen when he passionately helps the Les Amis de l’ABC in their revolution. Marius can be a bit dense in his convictions, however; for instance, how he initially distrusts Jean Valjean until he realizes that Valjean saved his life.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“Do I care if I should die now she goes across the sea… would you weep, Cosette, should Marius fall?”
Marius can see plenty of outcomes for all that surrounds him, and is quite often excited by them. As a student revolutionary, it comes easy: when first seen, he is discussing with Enjolras the many possible effects that General Lamarque’s death will have on the poor. He isn’t afraid to pursue new opportunities if his heart leads him to them, such as how he falls in love with Cosette at first sight and later appears in her garden to serenade her. After meeting Cosette, Marius frets and worries about what may happen between them shall the revolution fail, but sets his sights on keeping their love strong come what may.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“Empty chairs at empty tables, where my friends will meet no more.”
Marius is more comfortable looking towards what may be than keeping the past in mind, but he shows that it isn’t impossible for him. Although he doesn’t share Eponine’s feelings for him, he enjoys their long lasting friendship and is heartbroken when she dies in “A Little Fall of Rain”. After the revolution fails, Marius falls into an Fi-Si loop caused by survivor’s guilt; his memories of the battle are unbearably vivid and precise, falling to a deep depression over the loss of his fellow comrades. A few months later, he happily marries Cosette during the “Wedding Chorale” and is on his way to settling down with her.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“A heart full of love, a heart full of song. I’m doing everything all wrong!”
Marius is, to put it nicely, a little thick when it comes to using logical analysis. He much prefers using his heart to guide his decisions than his brain, which sometimes has negative consequences. The best example would be when Eponine dies after he sends her to deliver a letter to Cosette across enemy lines. He continuously overthinks problems, only believing as though he can gain some control over his life when it is a life-or-death scenario such as the barricade. In “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables”, he falsely blames himself for the death of Les Amis de l’ABC, once again feeling a lack of power.

Fastrada from Pippin
ENFJ
by Rebecca
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“God’s wisdom teaches me when I help others, I’m really helping myself!”
Fastrada is successful in manipulation particularly because she is able to present herself in certain ways and charm others. She is bubbly and flirtatious, used as a front as she slides in ideas and thoughts that help to bring Louis to the throne. Her solo song, “Spread A Little Sunshine,” is focused around “helping” others – or, rather, acting kind to others in order to exploit them. Under the guise of aiding Pippin and Charlemagne, she is really placing them up against one another. She seems to enjoy attention as well, whether from the men in her life or from the audience.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“I’d rather be drawn and quartered than think I was in any way responsible for what happened next.”
Fastrada is looking ahead – she has her goals, so she seeks them in whatever way she can. Her main goal is to make Louis the king, and she knows that whether Pippin kills Charlemagne or the other way around, there is a path. Since she is constantly looking ahead to this one goal, she is able to find the steps to reach it. Her ability to understand others, bolstered by her Fe, is what allows her to manipulate them so effectively. She knows more or less what will happen next as she hides her true goals under the surface, letting her plan come more or less to fruition.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“Despite this rejection, I took upon my tiny shoulders the task of affecting a rapprochement between two men for whom I felt deeply.”
Fastrada is far from unaware of her good looks and appeal, and she uses it alongside her Fe to get what she wants. It is mentioned that a great deal of Fastrada’s influence over Charlemagne is their sexual relationship. She tends to buy many expensive things, to the point that she is spending more money than she actually has. She lusts after power, though in an indirect manner – her desire to put her son on the throne will allow her even greater influence than she already has. She tends to see most of the people in her life as disposable, as she sticks with Charlemagne primarily for his power and seems to have no real affection for Pippin.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“I’m just an ordinary housewife and mother, just like all you housewives and mothers out there.”
One aspect of Fastrada’s plans is that she always requires others to get things done, rarely taking direct control herself. She seems much more content with keeping her plans close and pulling the strings. She seems comfortable with manipulating other people’s emotions rather than acting as a logical advisor. Her plans for putting Louis on the throne rely mostly on the growing emotional tensions between Pippin and Charlemagne. She doesn’t care much who is around her as long as she isn’t alone.

Otto Frank from The Diary of Anne Frank
INTJ
by Rebecca
requested by

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“But always remember this, Anneke. There are no walls, there are no bolts, no locks that anyone can put on your mind.”
Otto is constantly doing his best to look beyond – whether beyond the present to the future, or outside of the Annex. He tries to remain optimistic and hopeful even when it seems things are falling apart, and tries to spread this way of thinking with others. He is able to look beyond people’s immediate words and expressions to figure out what they are really feeling and how best to talk to them. This sensitivity to what happens underneath helps him to become a trustworthy leader in the Annex. His ability to be aware of what is going on beneath the surface and in the long term helps him to avoid falling apart completely throughout his struggles.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“ What about it, Peter? Shall we make our school coeducational?”
Otto is almost always level-headed, easily falling into a position of leadership both in his job prior to the Annex and in the Annex itself. He is known for his high level of education and his ability in leading a business prior to arriving at the Annex. He shows a desire for knowledge and understanding, whether through reading books or through wanting to fully grasp a dangerous situation. He finds logical solutions as often as possible, avoiding getting overwhelmed in his pursuit of order and peace in the Annex. But finds that there are not always logical solutions to things, and whatever structure he may provide may not be enough.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“She puts me to shame.”

Otto is constantly striving to do what is right, aligned with his mature and clear moral compass. He does his best to instill values in his children, something in which he is quite successful. In particular, after reading through his daughter’s diary, he feels that he cannot match Anne’s inherent goodness and ability to see good in the world. He tends to be levelheaded and at ease with his emotions without becoming aloof, shown particularly well through his sense of humor. Generally, he does not become emotionally overwhelmed in the outward manner of most of the other people in the Annex, so when his emotions do flood out, it becomes clear something is very wrong.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“ I can’t stay in Amsterdam, Miep. It has too many memories for me. Everywhere there’s something…the house we lived in…the school…that street organ playing out there…”
Otto is more of a planner than an improviser, though he can do the latter if it is necessary. The moments of greatest chaos and highest emotions are the ones where Otto breaks, unable to find a proper solution. He is more of a natural peace-keeper, disliking the moments of overwhelm that sometimes occur in the high-stress environment of the Annex. But when Otto cannot look past the present moment with his Ni, he struggles the most. This is seen after the Annex, when the sensory details of his trauma end up haunting him, leading him to feel that he must leave Amsterdam behind.

Mimi Marquez from RENT
ESTP
by Owen
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“My body’s talking to me, it says ‘Time for danger’!”
Mimi thrives fearlessly in the present, taking advantage of every opportunity for adventure that comes her way. She’s quick to think on her feet, such as when she keeps finding excuses to stay at Roger’s apartment in “Light My Candle”. She expresses her love for sex, drugs, and good times in many instances, particularly in “Out Tonight”. She enjoys dressing in a provocative and flashy way, which draws her much attention from many people. Mimi works as an S&M stripper, which showcases her natural physicality and the rush she gets from performing for a crowd.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“You don’t want baggage without lifetime guarantee. You don’t want to watch me die.”
Mimi operates under her own sense of logic with every choice she makes. She lives by her philosophy of living each moment as her last, which makes sense to her because of her AIDS. She realizes before Roger does how his moving out to Santa Fe may not be the best idea for him or their relationship, and discovers why he is truly leaving through her analysis in “Goodbye Love”. Mimi is also quite clever and droll with her remarks, using her captivating wit in “Light My Candle” to her advantage. Her analyses of other people tend to be right, such as her belief about Roger.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“The moon glows. The river flows. But I die without you.”
Mimi greatly appreciates the support and love of those around her, finding new ways for her to show her love back. Mimi is, of course, very charming and seductive to all she meets, causing Roger and the rest of the group to warm up to her immensely over the course of Christmas Eve. She tends to go into an Se-Fe loop, as her emotions can be kept under control one moment and explosive the next. She finds herself falling for Roger against her expectations, finding that she depends on his wavering affection in “Without You”.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“No other road, no other way. No day but today.”
While Mimi has an auxiliary thinking function, planning towards the future is her weakest flaw. She spends so much of her time in the present that she is quite reckless about what may happen to her in the future, regardless of her physical health. When Roger leaves her in “Goodbye Love”, she runs away from the rehab and starts living out on the street without much thought or care. She takes hard drugs as part of the wisdom she states in “Another Day”, ignoring that they might make her succumb to her disease sooner and instead distracting herself from the harsh reality.

Connor Murphy from Dear Evan Hansen
ISTP
by Rebecca
requested by anonymous
Note: Suicide and mental illness mentioned.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“But, if somehow you can keep them thinking of me…”
Connor is always making his own conclusions, approaching the world with his own mind. He lives very much in his own head and the conclusions he has made there, not trying to shift others or interact with them. He sees no need to rely on others in most of his life – he demonstrates a belief that he only needs himself. He appears rather enigmatic and distant from the others at his high school, keeping his own thoughts to himself. Because he focuses so strongly on his own inner sense of logic, he tends to misinterpret situations and go solely with his gut reaction, which becomes even more of a narrow view when combined with his tertiary Ni.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“No one’s signed your cast.”
Connor doesn’t wait to act once he believes he knows what is going on, and he doesn’t hold back. When he gets upset, he tends to react in physical ways, often threatening or using violence to get out his emotions. An example of this is when he pushes Evan over, overwhelmed by the idea of people laughing at him. He uses drugs to the point where he is going to school while high, a signal of substance abuse. He easily notices details about the external world and finds ways to react to them, whether or not he seems to care about the consequences of these actions.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“You wrote this because you knew that I would find it.”
Connor has trouble seeing a future for himself, and when he looks deeper into situations he often ends up going astray. Perhaps the biggest example of this is when he sees the letter Evan wrote mentioning Zoe and believes Evan wrote the letter so that he would see it and freak out. He jumps to an immediate conclusion, becoming fixated on this one idea and refusing to see beyond his gut reaction. He also is shortsighted when it comes to his own future, which is likely a factor in him taking his own life. His Ni is used in a very unhealthy manner, used to help support faulty Ti conclusions and give him an excuse to act dangerously in his life.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“You think I’m the freak?”
Connor is a loner who appears to have no friends and few social connections, tied to a lack of social ability. He generally doesn’t seem able to reach out to others and form some kind of friendship, instead often scaring people away. Typically, when he shows emotion, it is only anger and aggression spilling out all at once. But underneath, there is clearly a longing for some kind of a connection, as seen in the genuine moment where he ends up signing Evan’s cast. In spite of Connor constantly appearing alone, it seems that on some level he wants to be understood and accepted by the greater public, pushing against the idea of being a “freak” and trying to form some kind of connection with Evan.

Freddy Eynsford-Hill from My Fair Lady
ESFP
by Owen
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“All at once am I several stories high knowing I’m on the street where you live!”
Freddy lives in the moment, making decisions as soon as they present themselves. He isn’t afraid to rush things, such as when he instantly falls for Eliza and her peculiar behaviour at the horse race. Freddy is very detail oriented and in touch with his surroundings at all times, best seen during “On the Street Where You Live” as he poetically describes all that is around him as he waits for Eliza. Being of the upper class, he also places much importance on his appearance and personality.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“But why? She was magnificent!”
Freddy prefers to keep his emotions – even what he believes to be the greatest swellings of love – to himself. Rather than express his feelings towards Eliza himself, he decides instead to wait outside her house and write her letters, which prompts Eliza to shun him with outrage in “Show Me”. Freddy has his own moral compass that is slightly different from his family’s and those around him. He appreciates Eliza’s “naughtiness”, viewing her as a breath of fresh air in the stuck up society he belongs to.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“Darling, how could you think such a thing?”
Freddy may not appear to be smart because of his emotions and romantic gestures, but he has some logic hidden deep within him. His analytic skills can be seen in the simplest of ways, such as the joy he gets from placing bets on horses at the races. He plots to wait outside of Eliza’s house for her in “On the Street Where You Live”, which makes perfect sense to him and no one else (due to his auxiliary Fi). His Te, thus, is quite underdeveloped even though he tries his best to get what he wants.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“Nothing. I spend most of my time here.”
Being as immersed in his immediate surroundings as he is, Freddy comes off as having a lack of ambition. He never suspects that he will run into the girl he bumped into in front of the Royal Opera House, and is surprised when he runs into Eliza (the girl) again at the horse races. He places all importance on her at once, which has little depth… even if he has the best intentions. Freddy even goes so far as to wait outside her house for weeks, which makes her reasonably upset and put off by him.

Lola from Kinky Boots
ESFP
by Rebecca
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“No need to be embarrassed. I like being looked at, and you like to look.”
Lola’s focus centers around her appearance and her presence, allowing her to remain in charge of the moment no matter where she goes. She puts a great of effort into her appearance, whether or not she is wearing drag. In addition, she often discusses elements of a sexual nature, such as in “The Sex is in the Heel.” She demonstrates physical ability with her experience in boxing, as she is able to hold her own against Don in the ring. But, above all, Lola is able to captivate and seize the world around her, both as a performer and as a person.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“Hold me in your heart till you understand. Hold me in your heart just the way that I am.”
It might seem easy to write Lola off for appearing shallow, but she reveals a great deal of depth and confidence within her own identity. One of her primary goals in life is to get her father to understand her personality and way of life. Despite pressures to change and be “a man,” Lola consistently stays true to herself and every quirk that comes along with her personality. She is loyal and fights for what she believes in, teaching those around her lessons about understanding others and sticking to a goal. She presses people to embrace themselves just as she has embraced herself, and leads everyone from Charlie to Don through her dedication.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“Look at me powerless and holding my breath, trying hard to repress what scared him to death.”
Lola’s tendency towards emotions and understanding sometimes diverts her from more logical ways of looking at things, but she is more than capable of planning and thoughtfulness. More often than not, Lola’s tertiary Te manifests itself in a feeling of a lack of control. As confident as she is and as much of a presence as she has, she finds that in many areas of life she is unable to exert control, such as in the situation with her father. In many ways, however, she is a leader – for instance, she takes charge of the way the boots look in the factory. This element, of course, stems from strength in her own identity, an element of her Fi.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“When I lost my way, you were there to see me through. Now let Lola lend some love and do the same for you!”
Since she was young, Lola fixated on performing and becoming someone glamorous and fascinating, to the point she never separated from it. The path she started on when she was young led her to drag, and she has stuck with it. She focuses less on specifics in the future because she is more interested in the details of the moment. Lola tends to struggle somewhat when the plans she does make are twisted, such as when Charlie disagrees with her decision to use the angels as models. She is often aware of the consequences of what she does, but that does not mean she hesitates in spur of the moment action.

Annie from Annie
INFJ
by Owen
requested by elizasicarus, seasons-of-stories

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“The sun will come out tomorrow, so you gotta hang on ‘till tomorrow, come what may.”
Annie is extremely optimistic, always looking towards “Tomorrow” for a better life than the one she has. She keeps the note from when her parents dropped her off at the orphanage, showing hope in “Maybe” that they’ll come back to get her. She finds much comfort in this hope, driving her to run away from the orphanage and eventually be found by Grace to spend Christmas with Warbucks. She looks for the deeper meanings and intentions in everything, such as when she sense that Rooster and Lily (in disguise) aren’t her real parents.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“Together forever, we’re tying a knot they never can sever!”
Annie has a bright, cheerful personality that she keeps, no matter what happens to her. She acts as the peacemaker between the orphans when they start fighting, standing up for them against Miss Hannigan multiple times. She’s uses her emotions to get what she wants, such as when she charms Grace into taking her to Warbucks’ mansion or when she gets Warbucks to come with her and Grace to explore New York City. Her lively and kind personality gets many people to love her, such as when Warbucks decides to adopt her for himself.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“Because I guess I always knew that my folks were dead. Because I knew they loved me.”
Although she hasn’t had an education, Annie is quite intelligent and capable of using logic. She uses her wits to make plans, as seen when she sneaks out of the orphanage in the laundry man’s bag, or to get out of trouble, such as when she saves Sandy from being put in the dog pound by telling the policeman that Sandy is her dog. Annie can also understand what many of the adults around her are discussing, such as Herbert Hoover’s poor politics. Annie works with her own set of rules, which sometimes clashes with those around her but works out in the end.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“Used to room in a tomb where I’d sit and freeze. Get me now, holy cow, will somebody pinch me please?”
Because Annie is so hopeful and spends a lot of time wishing for her parents to come back, she doesn’t spend much time within the moment. When she does act on a whim, it has a wide set of outcomes ranging from good to bad, such as when her runaway attempt causes Mrs. Hannigan to be even more furious at her. Annie has spent all of her life in the unhygienic orphanage, and thus is overwhelmed with wonder when she arrives at Warbucks’ mansion after being found by Grace (“I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here.”)

Hermes from Hadestown
ENTP
by Rebecca
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“To know how it ends, and still begin to sing it again, as if it might turn out this time…”
Hermes is interested in the cycles of change, and the way certain elements can deviate from these cycles and what effects this has. In particular, he discusses the feeling of wishing the stories of the past could turn out differently – he wants to break out even though he knows it is not possible. This is tied to the reason he keeps telling the story to new people, in the hopes that they can go away having learned something. He is aligned with hope and opportunity, often telling the protagonists of the story how they can continue moving forward and forge their lives. He wants to propel forward movement as much as possible, working as a messenger who sparks action and new directions into existence.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“Either get to Hell or to Hadestown – ain’t no difference anymore!”
Hermes is very much independent – he helps who he wants to helps, stays out when he wants to stay out, and forges his own path. While many others are plagued with doubt from the Fates, Hermes shows confidence in each of his decisions, allowing him to stay out of many difficulties within the narrative. He is not afraid to speak his mind, particularly when it comes to Hadestown and how he sees it as a hellish city focused entirely on hard labor. Hermes also carries around a great deal of knowledge that he can share with others when he sees fit, such as the path to Hadestown. He builds personal understandings of the conflicts and ideas that surround him, letting him figure out things for himself.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“Yeah, with all your heart? Well, that’s a start.”
While Hermes may make himself out to appear gruff and aloof to people’s problems, it is clear he cares a great deal about others and easily creates bonds. Hermes clearly has a bleeding heart when it comes to Eurydice, Orpheus, and their love, as he presents their tragic story and helps them as much as possible around the way. For instance, he immediately bows down to Orpheus’s request for help after Orpheus discusses his boundless love for Eurydice, breaking a rule concerning Hadestown. He directly appeals to those listening to the story, showing a great deal of charisma and interest in their interest along the way. He doesn’t want to be anyone’s enemy – no, he would much rather have a wide variety of friends.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“It’s an old song, but we’re gonna sing it again and again.”
Hermes’ role in Hadestown is tied to his role as a storyteller – he is returning to the tales of the past time and time again. The tale of Orpheus and Eurydice is clearly one that is long gone, but it is one that Hermes feels compelled to relive. Although he is interested in moving things forward, he has one foot solidly in the past. Hermes also shows an interest in the cycles of the world, from the stories he tells to the way the seasons pass by, but tends to focus on the change within these cycles (Ne). He shows that he knows there is no change without understanding what the past is, allowing him to look at the past and the cycles of the world without getting lost in them.

Robert from Company
ESTP
by Owen
requested by anonymous

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“Phone rings, dorm chimes, in comes company! No strings, good times, room hums, company!”
Robert adores the sensual and thrilling side of life, taking in all it can immediately offer to him. He enjoys many activities with his friends, including watching Sarah and Harry attempt karate, smoking with David and Jenny, or going to the nightclub with Joanne and Larry. He is very physically attractive, as all the characters mention, and has sexual encounters quite often, such as his night with April. Robert acts within the moment, making large choices on a whim. The best example is when he asks Amy to marry him after she frantically calls off her wedding, his thoughts in “Marry Me A Little” mirroring his newfound confidence.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“I am certainly not resisting marriage. I am ready to be married.”
Robert has his own inner logic that shapes his decisions, whether major or minor. He is capable of making clever and witty remarks, such as when he is talking to David and Jenny about why is isn’t married yet. His analytical reasoning makes sense to him, even if his friends disagree, and he sticks to what he believes to be true. He is amused by other people’s concepts and wisdom, as seen when he enjoys Marta’s theory about New Yorkers. His logic is extremely adaptable to just about everything due to his dominant Se, such as the story he devises about leaving a woman in a motel in order to seduce April.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“Look, you’re a very special girl, not just overnight.”
Being a bachelor, Robert is quite popular with his friends and with women. He is immensely devoted to his friends, such as when he sticks by Peter and Susan during their divorce, and turns down Peter – out of loyalty to Susan – after he suggests that he and Robert engage in a sexual liaison. Robert handles all situations with a calm and amicable air, including when he finds out that Kathy is engaged. Robert is, of course, very charming and skilled at seducing women into his bed, but has multiple faults when it comes to the relationships themselves, as Marta, Kathy, and April say in “You Could Drive A Person Crazy”.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“Somebody make me come through; I’ll always be there, as frightened as you of being alive…”
Robert almost never looks at the future seriously, and his judgement is clouded by negative preconceptions of marriage when he does. He acts without thinking about the possible results, such as when asks April to stay after she spends the night instead of flying to “Barcelona”, and is regretful when she decides to stay. Robert has an inkling of intuition in “Someone is Waiting”, when he describes someone with the qualities of his female friends, and it comes to be fully in “Being Alive” after Joanne suggests an affair and he refuses. It is only then that Robert delves the deepest into finding his future with a realistic and mature outlook.
