Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“Oh, what a beautiful mornin’! Oh, what a beautiful day! I’ve got a beautiful feelin’ everything’s goin’ my way!”
Curly lives within the moment, taking in everything he can all at once. The first words in the show are sung by him, after all, in “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’” as he appreciates the nature of the territory. He enjoys the finer things in life, as seen when he spends lots of money on a fancy “Surrey with the Fringe on Top” to impress Laurey and convince her to go to the box social with him. His ability to dodge Jud’s stabs at him before Jud dies and create an impromptu trial afterwards also prove his ability to act quickly and successfully.Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“You sure relieved my mind considerably.”
Curly is quite independent in his thinking and has an inner map of logic that he uses to guide him through life. He can be quite blunt with his words when he isn’t using them with his Fe to obtain a greater goal, showing that he is quite clever and witty. His analytical skills can be seen the most when he comforts Laurey after she is threatened by Jud, realizing that he will have to become a farmer after proposing to her in order to be financially stable. He thinks quickly when assessing a situation – such as the impromptu trial – while staying grounded in reality.Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“Your hand feels so grand in mine, people will say we’re in love!”
Curly is effortlessly charismatic in everything he does, making him an idol in the eyes of everyone in the town: Aunt Eller, Gertie, Will, and eventually Laurey. He is very charming in his flirtations with Laurey, such as in “People Will Say We’re In Love” as he tries to prove to her that he really does care for her. However, Curly can also use his charm for emotional manipulation, like when he succeeds in amicably convincing Jud that killing himself would make him more well-liked in “Pore Jud is Daid”.Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“When I take you out tonight with me, honey, here’s the way it’s goin’ to be.”
Curly spends the entire show with one singular goal in mind – taking Laurey to the box social in the surrey that he bought. Thus, he can seem quite one-minded and starts to get upset when his plans don’t work out like he thought they would. He doesn’t always think of the consequences of his actions, such as when Jud gets furious at him after he starts to realize what Curly is truly saying in “Pore Jud is Daid” and tries to shoot him. However, he stays optimistic and hopeful that he and Laurey will settle down and live happily together – which they do.
