Christine Canigula from Be More Chill

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“I have mad, gigantic feelings, red and frantic feelings about most everything. Like gun control, like spring, like if I’m living up to all I’m meant to be. I also have a touch of ADD.”
Christine has many interests, but gives weight and love to all of the different aspects of her life even if others can’t keep up. In “I Love Play Rehearsal,” she explains herself as someone who is both excitable and passionate about many different things at once. She switches between different ideas rapidly, giving the impression that all her thoughts are of equal importance and are constantly spiraling in her mind.
When Jake starts to show interest in her, she takes a chance on him despite him acting differently than he did in the past. She sees value in a number of places and things, and feels that she can try new experiences and expand her mind.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“I don’t always relate to other people my age, except when I’m on the stage, and there are so many changes that I’m going through, and why am I telling this to you?”
Christine knows herself well – she understands her own interests, her own feelings, and how she might not be the same as other teenagers. She feels different from others, knowing that her dedication to play rehearsal and her constantly spiraling passions separate her from most teens. She doesn’t want to conform to what other people like, instead choosing to give in to what she knows she loves and staying true to it. She only shows interest in guys when they show interest in her first, showing that values a personal understanding and connection. Christine gets closest to those who meet her as she is, rather than trying to change her into someone else.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“I love play rehearsal cause’ you are equipped with direction and text. Life is easy in rehearsal. You follow a script so you know what comes next.”
While she loves a number of things in a number of ways, Christine can also appreciate structure and control in her life. Though her thoughts pull her in all different directions (Ne), she enjoys the order and direction that following a script in rehearsal can bring. She can adhere to an external sense of structure, such as a script, as it gives her a path to concentrate her love for theatre. After getting rid of her SQUIP, she feels embarrassed by the fact that deep inside she enjoyed the structure and stability it could grant her. In spite of her self-reliance and individuality, she still relies on external structures to keep herself upright.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“Say there’s this person you pass in the hall every day. You’ve known him since seventh grade, you’re used to thinking about him in a certain way from the persona that he displayed. Then something changes, and he changes.”
Christine, for all her enthusiasm about doing all sorts of different things, often aligns herself with cycles and past methods. She shows that she is used to a certain level of stability and sameness, and that sometimes that can actually provide comfort. Following a set script, for instance, allows Christine to connect with the past and find a kind of internal order. This is reflected once again when she realizes “deep down [she] just [wants] things to be easy” and predictable. Even though she is constantly pulling herself outward and forward, she needs some sort of internal stability to keep herself together.

Hedda Gabler from Hedda Gabler
ISTP
by Rebecca
Note: Mentions of suicide and gun violence.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“Everything I touch seems destined to turn into something mean and farcical.”
Hedda is constantly evaluating her current surroundings and situation to calculate her next moves.
Even though it is very much an impetuous decision, Hedda burning Lovborg’s manuscript is a result of Hedda’s intense thought process: he made it with Thea, it is his life’s work, it is practically his child and she cannot bear to have it exist any longer. She also is fiercely independent and refuses to let anyone have complete control over her – even though she desires to control others (Ni, Fe). When she realizes Judge Brack has an edge on her, she becomes desperate to escape to the point she takes her own life.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“These impulses come over me all of a sudden, and I just can’t resist them.”
Hedda displays a remarkable ability to assess and act in the present moment, collecting information and making a decision almost immediately. There are several moments where Hedda acts entirely on impulse, finding that she needs to spark some sense of excitement in her life. For instance, she shoots her pistols at Judge Brack despite the immense detail, then explains it away by saying the Judge shouldn’t have come in through the garden. She is acutely aware of every detail in her surroundings, such as when she is able to quickly react and shift her behaviors when Tesman walks into her conversation with Thea. Her quick responses allow her to stay on top of the situation, most of the time – but sometimes she finds things out of her reach go awry.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“I want for once in my life to have power to mold a human destiny.”

Hedda dedicates herself to specific visions of the future, and uses these as her motivation to keep moving forward – that is, until those specific visions are irrevocably broken. Throughout the play, Hedda is pursuing one, defined, ultimate goal: to control another human’s fate. She pursues this goal completely and utterly, pushing all of her actions and plans toward this goal, to the point she feels she must take her own life when the tables are turned on her. Hedda has a very specific idea of how she wants Lovborg’s fate to play out, picturing him with leaves in his hair, dying beautifully. Her personal image going forward is etched into her mind, and she is distraught when she discovers that this not end up becoming reality.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“I can remember quite distinctly. So now we are going to renew our old friendship. There now! You must call me Hedda. ”
In her life, Hedda struggles to meld to the desires of society as a whole, refusing to give up her independent spirit or act kindly toward others. Hedda is not afraid of manipulating others, seen most clearly as she feigns friendship with Thea in order to gain more information about Lovborg. There is something inherently magnetic about Hedda that she uses to her advantage, finding that she can mold other people’s feelings to get them to do as she likes. She has trouble relating to others and consistently showing kindness, as seen when she insults Mrs. Tesman’s hat on impulse (Se). For Hedda, fitting into society’s expectations and control is stifling at best, and utterly destructive at worst.

Michael Mell from Be More Chill
ISFP
requested by anonymous
by Owen

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“I’m just Michael who you don’t know, Michael flyin’ solo, Michael in the bathroom by himself.”
Michael is odd and eccentric, and he won’t let anyone tell him to be anything else. He has an extremely strong moral compass within himself that guides his emotions, mainly based off of his loyalty to Jeremy. However, when Jeremy starts to mistreat him due to the SQUIP, Michael starts to bottle up his feelings even though he is very hurt by Jeremy’s actions. He rarely lets anyone see his true emotions, as best seen in “Michael in the Bathroom,” where he has a panic attack alone at the Halloween party because Jeremy has left him again.

Extroverted Sensing (Se)
“Evolution’s survival of the fittest, right?”
Michael lives in the moment, enjoying all of life’s immediate pleasures. He enjoys food, anime, marijuana, and video games, all of which require a great deal of use of the senses. His philosophy on playing games in “Two Player Game” also translates into real life, as he attempts to take action when the situation presents itself. He encourages Jeremy to do many things in the moment that he otherwise wouldn’t do, such as ask out Christine or go to Payless to find the SQUIP. In the end, Michael finds it within himself to save the school from the SQUIP using his Se.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“Guys like us are cool in college, we rule in college, listen bro…”
While Michael lives mostly in the present, he is astonishingly intuitive. When Jeremy first tells him about the SQUIP, Michael immediately predicts that Jeremy is being “scammed,” and that the pill will have negative effects on him and their friendship. Yet, more often than not, he is very idealistic about what the future holds. In “Two Player Game,” he reveals his hopes that he and Jeremy will be more accepted and seen as “cool” once they get to college. His vision shows that he obviously hopes his friendship with Jeremy will last for a very long time.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“Of all possible applications for such a mind-blowingly advanced technology, did you ever wonder what it’s doing inside of YOU?”
Michael’s actions and thoughts are based on his emotions, which causes him trouble when he has to use logic. When Jeremy starts to ditch him, he finds his emotions spiraling out of control until he falls into near-suicidal ideation during “Michael in the Bathroom.” He attempts to stand up for himself many times during the show, but failing each time because he can’t find the strength within himself to do so. However, his Te isn’t completely inferior: he is able to use many facts to argue with Jeremy about whether the SQUIP’s intentions are truly benevolent.

Pearl from Ghost Quartet
ESFJ
by Rebecca
As Pearl is several people within the context of the show, this typing is focusing specifically on the two incarnations named Pearl – the original sister and the camera shop owner.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“I thought of someone I love very much, smiling in bed, clutching a teddy bear. And then, I let the train rip through me.”
Pearl is both personable and open with her feelings, unafraid to speak and share. When first greeting Rose at the camera shop, she openly invites conversation and boldly dives into the story of the two sisters. She demonstrates a desire to share, externalizing her feelings in order to connect with others – especially her reincarnated sister. Even when she is about to be killed by the subway train, she is thinking of other people and their feelings. She thinks of Rose, who takes a photograph, and of someone she loves in order to bring comfort before death.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“It was the breastbone of her sister. Her name was Pearl. I’ll tell you the story.”
Pearl’s main function within Ghost Quartet is storytelling – remembering the past, and bringing it forward. She is often asking Rose if she remembers, using pieces of the past to try and piece the entire narrative together. The bits and pieces of the past (if you can call it that within the show’s timeline) are ever-present in her mind, and she wishes to use them. She shows a strong awareness of herself within a moment, noting how she thinks and feels in the moments before death. On the subway track, where times collide, Pearl is remarkably aware of all her senses and surroundings.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“Oh Rose. You’re my sister, and you’re my lover, and you’re my child, and you’re my best friend.”

Pearl has experienced, or at least knows of, many different lifetimes and incarnations. She does not seem to fear this truth, but instead acknowledge it as a part of her existence and reality. Her strange place within time requires her to look at both past and future as something far more circular and unpredictable. She tends to stick to storytelling to get Rose to remember, however, rather than trying a variety of approaches. Even in different incarnations, Pearl does not seem to vary much from her core self.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“Reveal it to me, reveal me everything. Reveal it to me please right now.”
Pearl, in her journey to get Rose to remember, appeals far more to emotion than logic. She pushes Rose into emotional experiences and memories that can often bridge into the operatic. In “The Camera Shop,” she goes from simple storytelling to dramatics, pressing Rose to remember even as she seems utterly confused and overwhelmed. The Pearl on the subway platform gets too invested in her game and her own distracted mind to notice the pusher before it is too late. One could say that she should’ve known better than to let herself be so invested in a meaningless game.

Avrum from The Band’s Visit
ESFJ
by Rebecca
requested by @solidikeafurniture

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“Love starts on a downbeat. Love starts when the music starts. Love starts when the tune is sweet and you lift your feet to the beat of your heart.”
Avrum is warm and friendly, choosing to be open and positive about his emotions both sweet and bitter. When he reveals that his wife died, instead of becoming upset he uses the opportunity to share the love he found in “The Beat of Your Heart.” He is able to find companionship and understanding through this song, bringing all of the men in the house to celebrate the past together. He welcomes the members of the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Band into the home, trying to spark conversation. Even though Iris and Itzik are in the midst of tense spot, he remains open and tries to keep spirits up among everyone.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“Sometimes it feels like we’re moving in a circle, around and around with the same scenery going by. But no one’s complaining, we’re experts at waiting…”
Avrum finds comfort and stability from the past, seeing it as both a driving and grounding force in his life. He remembers every detail of the time when he first met and fell in love with his wife, down to the ribbons in her hair. He acknowledges a sense of sentimentality, especially about such an important and emotionally charged moment in his life. In “Waiting,” he seems content with the notion of moving in circles, even if he can feel a desire to move to something new. He’s willing to find the good in things that stay the same, and willing to find excitement in possibilities and newness (Ne).

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“Violin. I play in wedding, bar mitzvahs. All songs, Beatles, Rolling Stone. Klezmer. It’s how I meet my wife. Iris mother.”
Avrum is both energetic and excitable, showing enthusiasm when new opportunities turn up in his life. He often repeats “wow!” after discovering some new fact about the members of the Alexandria Police Band, externalizing the excitement he feels. He does not seem phased by their presence and how it could threaten the status quo, but welcomes it as a source of new ideas. Back when he was in a band, he played all kinds of music, and was open to all kinds of experiences. He took a chance when it came to first connecting with the girl who would one day become his wife, even though she had come with someone else.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“So maybe I’m romantic. Maybe I’m a sentimental fool.”
Avrum tends to be more focused on keeping harmony present than confronting and analyzing problems at hand. Though there is a deep tension between his daughter Iris and her husband Itzik, he never directly confronts the issue until it explodes. He is aware of some sense of conflict, taking care to comfort Iris, but chooses to divert energy from the problem rather than solve it. He focuses deeply on the memory of his wife in an emotional sense, deliberately choosing to lean into the feelings of the music. He acknowledges that he may be looking through the past through rose-colored lenses, but at the same time doesn’t seem to mind if he’s letting things become so sentimental (Si).

Jason from Falsettos
INTJ
by Lelah
requested by @relatablepicturesofsadiemiller

Introverted Intuition (Ni)
“Suddenly it all came clear; I said, let’s have my bar mitzvah here!”
Exceptionally perceptive for his age, Jason sees the underlying issues around him. In “My Father’s a Homo,” he demonstrates a surprisingly deep understanding of his family’s dynamic; there, too, his interactions with his mother while he plays chess alone display that he lives within his own inner world, scorning the thought of interacting with others in favor of his one-person chess game, which he considers “the most beautiful thing in the world.” Very self-aware, Jason feels distinctly different from his peers and doesn’t believe that he is a “normal child,” and he often concerns himself with his own future, always worrying if he will end up like his father. To Jason, solutions to problems seem to come out of nowhere, as seen in “Jason’s Bar Mitzvah.” He sometimes over-stresses himself trying to figure out every problem: “What do I do? What do I say? What do I ask? What do I hope for? Is it my mind? Love isn’t free; if love isn’t blind, what do I see?”

Extraverted Thinking (Te)
“If intelligence were the only criterion, then I wouldn’t really need a psychiatrist, would I?”
Jason is exceptionally precocious, and he appreciates being able to assert control over his life. His parents’ bickering and fighting over his asocial nature and his bar mitzvah deeply frustrates him because they are aspects over which he feels like he should have control. He easily notices outer patterns and recognizes the sequence in which his life is lived, which he displays in “The Fight”: “I’m a world-class traveler each Friday night; travel travel travel from her house to his house; first take the 104 with my computer…” Once he has decided that something should happen, he takes over the situation: he plans Mendel’s proposal to Trina; he convinces his family to have his bar mitzvah in Whizzer’s hospital room; and when he prays for the first time, he bargains with God, promising that he’ll have his bar mitzvah if Whizzer “stops dying.”

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“Can’t we wait ‘til Whizzer gets better? Can’t we wait ‘til he’s out? That’s what bar mitzvahs should be all about: good friends close at hand. Don’t you understand?”
Jason has unflinching ideas about what is right and wrong and who he wants to be. He refuses to let go of his own opinions when pressured, even when it causes frustration to those around him — for instance, in his insistence not to have a bar mitzvah and then, later, to neither have it nor cancel it. He is stubbornly set in his view of the world, holding little regard for how others perceive it, and can come across as callous, for instance, when he declares that he’s “too good for my sorry little life; my mother’s no wife, and my father’s no man, no man at all.” His unwillingness to have a bar mitzvah until he realizes he can have it in Whizzer’s hospital room displays how deeply he cares about the people he holds dear (while not concerning himself with the superficial relationships he has with those he doesn’t know well). Nevertheless, his strong inner feelings are sometimes enigmatic even to his family.

Extraverted Sensing (Se)
“I want girls for whom I lust: girls who wear a lot of makeup, girls who smoke and show their busts…”
Jason lives in his own inner world, rarely attempting to stay in the moment. He prefers spending time alone with his thoughts to anything else. As he grows into an adolescent and begins to go through puberty, his Se begins to develop further, at which point he no longer believes that “chess is the most beautiful thing in the world” — rather, he thinks girls are the “most beautiful thing.” Still, even when fantasizing about his newfound desire, Jason fails to actually live in the moment, as seen when he barely pays attention to the baseball game he’s playing in favor of staying within his own world in “Miracle of Judaism/The Baseball Game.”

Doralee Rhodes from 9 to 5
ENFP
by Lelah

Extraverted Intuition (Ne)
“Nothing’s gonna change if you don’t change it!”
Doralee is idealistic and driven, always believing in a better future. When she, Violet, and Judy take over the office, she is the one to convince the rest of the employees that change is worth working towards. She is also incredibly ingenuitive and quick-thinking: when Violet believes she has fatally poisoned Hart, instead of panicking, she quickly leaves to find a lawyer; when Hart threatens to call the cops for the accidental poisoning, she hogties him with a phone cord; and once the trio takes over the office, she helps develop and institute revolutionary new corporate ideas that greatly increase productivity. Later in life, she continues to “follow her dreams” and becomes a famed country singer.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“You’ve got dreams they’ll never take away.”
Spirited and positive, Doralee refuses to let go of her ideals and identity, no matter the situation. Though the coldness of her coworkers hurts her, she stays positive and refuses to change herself to try and fit in; and she holds her own even when working for the sexist, licentious Franklin Hart. As enthusiastic and sweet as she is, Doralee rarely displays her emotions except to those closest to her, deliberately restraining anger, frustration, and sadness so effectively that she is seemingly unaware of Hart’s perverted desire for her — that is, until Hart’s deception on top of his aggressive advances pushes her over the edge and her intense inner feelings are furiously revealed. The feelings of others often perplex her, and she sometimes struggles to understand people’s reasoning — for instance, when she misinterprets her coworkers’ dislike for her, or, when Hart suggests she “comes over to his house” so that he won’t call the police on the trio, failing to recognize the innuendo and simply asking him how late he wants her to work.

Extraverted Thinking (Te)
“You don’t want your little light to never shine; turn it up on bright, and get your goals in line.”
Doralee is an efficient and devoted employee, effectively managing Hart’s affairs, and though she doesn’t actively seek out leadership, she certainly proves to be capable once the trio takes over the company. Though her logical knowledge that she needs her job sometimes blocks her from defending herself, she is assertive and honest, only becoming more so as the trio takes over Hart’s command.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“I grew up poor and ragged, just a simple country girl. I wanted to be pretty more than anything in the world.”
Despite her forward-thinking optimism, Doralee knows that her past has shaped her more than she cares to admit. In “Backwoods Barbie,” she reveals that the persona she has developed came from a childhood desire to be like the beautiful women she saw in magazines. She also displays attention to small details, keenly remembering how Hart keeps his office and easily forging his signature to maintain the ruse that Hart is still running the office. However, she often forgets these details when trying to understand her problems; for instance, in “I Just Might,” she laments her coworkers’ judgement of her without connecting it to the way Hart treats her, eventually learning that the other employees dislike her because of lies Hart spread.

Ismene from Antigone
ISFJ
by Rebecca
Note: Quotes taken from the Richard Emil Braun translation.

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“No, Antigone, since the day we both lost our brothers, both in one day, both to each other, I haven’t though of love – happy or painful, either.”
Ismene, who has lived through the loss of nearly her entire family, wants the chaos to end. When Antigone approaches her to bring up the idea of burying Polyneices, she shies away. She sees the past tragedies of their family and claims that they “should be sensible” and obey so that they do not suffer any further. She later steps up and claims she is also to blame for the burial, unwilling to let Antigone die and leave her alone. After so much loss in her life, she clings onto her sister, the one thing she still loves completely and the last member of their family.

Extroverted Feeling (Fe)
“What is life when I’ve lost you? What is there to love in life?”
Ismene is an emotional person who cares deeply about those around her, even if she rarely steps out of the line to show that love. She feels numb and paralyzed by the violence and death that surrounds her, unable to understand her own feelings. This leads her to say nothing makes her happy or hurts her any longer, even though she is often visibly upset by surrounding events. When Antigone is arrested, Ismene weeps and asks to share Antigone’s fate. Her emotions emerge violently and clearly, pushing her to act and claim she is at fault as well in order to align herself with her sister.

Introverted Thinking (Ti)
“A mind does not just grow and then stand. When our lives founder reason deserts us.”
In many ways, Ismene might be seen as the more “sensible” sister when compared to Antigone. She sees her place in Thebes and the situation as one where she should step back and avoid causing troubles. Though she feels she is betraying the dead, she justifies not helping Antigone by seeing their place in society and desiring to stay sensible. She later argues that she too should share the blame, desiring forgiveness for refusing to help Antigone earlier. She sees dying with Antigone as an honor, a means of service to the dead to make up for her former reluctance.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“What can I accomplish? There’s nothing left. What can I do or undo?”
Ismene is less about acting and enforcing change than she is trying to maintain peace and order. She warns Antigone against burying Polyneices, wanting her to avoid the horrible fates that the rest of their family has met. She speaks of feeling utterly powerless and hopeless, seeing only the potential for disaster in the coming future. She worries about losing Antigone, to the point that she is arrested and asks for the same sentence. This seems like a complete and strange shift, until she explains that she cannot bear to live alone, finding far more comfort in dying with her sister than going on in an unsure life without her.

Hi, I hope you’re having a lovely morning/evening/what have you! I was curious if you had a link to Hanschen Rilow’s MBTI profile? I checked your master list but only found the letters, not a full analysis. Anyways, I love your blog. You’ve done a very great job with it, and I refer to it allll the time :)

Hello!

You can find the typing here.

Sorry about the inconvenience – a large number of our links on the master list broke somewhat recently, and we have not yet found the time to sit down and fix all of them, hence the missing link.

Should you ever come across this again, know that the tag system is still working! You can look by type, show, and even character name. For instance, to pull up this typing quickly, I looked at http://theatrembti.tumblr.com/tagged/hanschen%20rilow – nice and straightforward!

Hope this helps!

Antigone from Antigone
ENFP
by Rebecca
Note: Quotes taken from the Richard Emil Braun translation.

Extroverted Intuition (Ne)
“Does anyone know? Maybe, down there, all this is pure.”
Antigone looks ahead and beyond her current state to possibilities and implications that are yet to be.
Unlike her sister Ismene, she appears unperturbed by the idea of risk and breaking the law, willing to step outside the lines drawn by Kreon. She worries about what would happen if her brother is left unburied, so she leaps at the opportunity to bury him herself. She seems to embrace the idea of death, less afraid of what it could be than ready to find out. She considers ideas such as justice and morality within the world of the dead, wondering about peace and terror all at once.

Introverted Feeling (Fi)
“…I did not believe that Zeus was the one who had proclaimed it; neither did Justice, or the gods of the dead whom Justice lives among.”
Antigone dedicates herself to what she sees as a higher justice, fearing little when she believes she is doing what is right and good. She acts directly against Kreon’s edict, burying her brother knowing that she will die for it. To her, the burial is a moral necessity and her duty, and she is willing to break any law and suffer any consequence to do what she believes is right. When Kreon sentences her to death, Antigone discusses how her morality aligns with that of the gods, above any mortal law. She is not interested in aligning with what Thebes thinks, but sticking to what she sees as absolute truth and good.

Extroverted Thinking (Te)
“No, shout it, proclaim it. I’ll hate you the more for keeping silence.”
Antigone is a forceful personality, using her intensity to create change in the world.
Her decision to bury Polyneices comes as much from thought as it does a place of love and devotion. She knows that she will be discovered, and that her actions will become a signal of Kreon’s injustice to Thebes. She shows a desire to push others towards her way of thinking, whether they bend to it or not – in particular, she demonstrates her worldview to Kreon and becomes frustrated when Ismene only supports her long after the burial. She wants others to understand and follow her, but refuses to forego any part of her self or her views to get such support (Fi).

Introverted Sensing (Si)
“Look at me now, citizens of my homeland. I walk the last path, watching my last of sunlight.”
Personal attachments to the past and nostalgia are not enough to keep Antigone from action. When she is about to die, she calls out to her city and speaks of the myth of Niobe. She shows this kind of nostalgia only when she is facing death, reaching out to her home and places of comfort. She is almost too willing to let go of life when it comes to defying the edict, showing little desire to stay for Ismene or Haimon. Though the past undeniably drives her tragedy, she keeps her sights set on much loftier ideas (Ne, Fi).
